  personal note from darshana

Many of you might be at Burning Man . For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about it's a huge gathering out in the dessert in Nevada with art, costumes and much more. I've never been so I can't speak from experience but I hear it's a lot of fun and very creative.

Since there is so much creative energy in the air I thought we would have a recipe contest using seasonal ingredients.

September is a great month for seasonal veggies. One reason is because we are between seasons. In the harvesting world we call this season late summer. We are still being blessed by summer foods like zucchini, tomatoes and corn while at the same time introducing our winter favorites; winter squashes (butternut, kombocha and acorn), winter greens and my favorite, persimmons. This a bountiful season. And since our (organic, local) farmers are working so hard to provide us healthy food why not eat and cook in accordance to the season instead of importing foods from across the world to feed ourselves.

Below is a list of seasonal ingredients. The person who can make a fabulous dish using at least 4 and no more than 8 ingredients from this list will "win the game". Since there are 100's of you that read this newsletter we will take the first 20 recipes that come in.

If you'd like to play we will need your recipe by Friday, September 21 st.

If you are the first place "winner" you will receive a yearly subscription to COOKS ILLUSTRATED. An awesome magazine where they test drive 100's of recipes and teach readers how to make the best version of everything.

For second place we will send you a copy of THE REAL FOOD DAILY cookbook. The cookbook comes from a great vegan natural foods restaurant in Los Angeles.

And the third place "winner" will receive attendance to one FWH cooking classes. If you live outside the area we will send you a different cookbook.

Oh, how are we judging the contest? I have a team of 3 people who are all natural foods chefs by "trade". They will be testing (and eating) the recipes and make their decision.

I'm sure this will not be an easy decision as so many of you already send me delicious recipes. To honor all of the great healthy cooks out there we will post every recipe we receive in a different newsletter. This way each of you can try new foods and increase your recipe library from the FWH community.

Have fun with this adventure and I look forward to tasting all the delicious food.

In health,

SEASONAL FALL 7 DAY CLEANSE
Transitioning through the seasons with ease

Ever notice that you get more colds as you shift from summer to fall or winter to spring? As the seasons change your immune system can become less stable.

Late summer and fall is the time to gather resources, stock up on foods and create healthy lifestyle changes. The new foods and healthy habits prepare your body to go inward, rest and do deep healing during the winter months.

It’s also the time of year in Chinese medicine when you can focus on cleansing the spleen, pancreas, stomach, large intestine and lungs. When you cleanse these organs you have the ability to curb sugar cravings and clear up your digestive track. But you must prepare ahead of time and not wait for the last minute if you want the best results.

Join nutrition expert and yoga teacher, Darshana Weill, for this guided 7 day cleansing workshop. The seasonal fall cleanse will support you to:

  • Clear up sugar cravings
  • Move stagnation in your intestines
  • Have more energy and
  • Build your immune system
You will:
  • Learn remedies, recipes and cleansing drinks
  • Receive guided instruction, tips and recommendations to personalize & support YOUR personal cleanse
  • Learn healthy ways to transition out of your cleansing process
  • Discover how you can get ongoing support to improve your health and nutrition
Other benefits of the cleanse
During the entire cleanse, you will be a part of an online support group so we can all learn from each other. In the past people have shared about many things, including noticeable changes in their cravings, digestion, or relationship to food and their body. People share what is going well and also their struggles. The group chimes in with support and understanding to help carry you through the cleanse.

September 22nd and September 29th, 2007 at Yoga Tree in San Francisco.
